Your “freestanding” tents aren’t freestanding – you want a freestanding tent – Big Sky Intl, Tarptent
Great review, it is nice to start seeing tents use the Polyester fly these days, because as someone who lives in the PNW and often hikes through rain storms in a rain forest, I’ve always made my own flat tarps as big as I can, usually 12ft x 12ft and hang it in trees or with cedar bowed branches with hiking poles. It makes sense why nylon is used because it is less weight and can be taped if there is polyurethane backing, but the whole point of a rain fly is to prevent rain, or dew, so that nylon always gets super saggy which is annoying if a wind ever picks up and there is condensation on the inside to spray you as the loose nylone shakes. I’d love to try a dursten poly tent with the removable fly to save weight when bugs are not around, but for that price I can build a tipi with multiple flat tarps.
Clips beat sleeves, always.
Questions on the Half Dome2 from REI also debating on the solid vs not.
Why are most tents all mesh? The ones Iām debating on are REI, Durston, and KUIU any opinions are welcomed
