Looking for the best backpacking water filter? I tested and compared 8 of the most popular options on the trail to see which ones really stand out. In this video, I go over price, flow rate, lifespan, what each one filters (bacteria, protozoa, viruses, chemicals), plus the pros and cons of every filter. I’ll share which ones I’ve used in the past, how they performed, and what I’ll be using for future hikes.

I cover how they handle flow rate, ease of use, pack weight, lifespan, and real-world performance on the trail. If you’re a thru-hiker, weekend warrior, day hiker or camper, you’ll see exactly which water filter is worth carrying in your pack.

  1. Here is the thing … the Grayl filters out viruses. If you are up in the mountains and you know for certain the water is safe enough it’s not needed … but if there is any risk of contamination it’s got to be the Grayl.

  2. I use the sawyer squeeze on top of a smart water bottle. I use bought the water bottle with the push/pull pour spout and put that on the end of the filter so i can still use that option, plus i can use the smart bottle to reverse flow the filters when needed. Ive had several and really like being able to rinse out the filters when they begin to slow down. I keep 2 together in my kit so there is always a clean one ready to use.

  3. I wanna shit in the water and then filter it and test the filtered water in a lab for ecoli and stuff. See if it really works or if you can still get the diarrhea during a hike from them.

  4. I used the sawyer squeeze for a 5 day trip in the gila wilderness, worked perfectly didnt get sick, will never use a different one
