Here we have another in-tents video from Backpacking TV! In this video I break down the differences between 4 season and your typical 3 season tent and why you might need to purchase a heavy duty winter tent for your winter camping, backpacking or hiking adventures. I’m a big proponent of saving money and using the gear you already have. Can you maximize the three season tent you already have? We’ll look at that here.

  1. I’ve got a Vaude Galaxy 3 season, 2 man free standing, dome, 2 side doors but I wouldn’t take it out in the snow-still need a winter tent.

  2. hey man, first of all thanks, I love your work. I have a big question and hope you can help me here please. I own a sleeping bag, rated -15F more or less. I had use it bivvying in the snow, only 1 night at a time. So, my 2 questions are, If I’m planning a 2 -3 nights out in Yosemite in February, do you think that just bivvying with my bag will be ok? as it it quite toasty sleeping bag or do I require better a winter tent?. and 2nd question: I never used one before so, not sur eof the warmth ratio compared to a 3 season tent, so I’m afraid that if I bring one winter tent + my winter sleeping bag, will be overkill, I own also the Big Agnes Cooper Spur HV 2, so… what should I do? Thank you

  3. Hey Eric, I’m considering a tent just like this. Same weight and everything. Would you recommend this tent for a place outside of alpine/mountaineering.. say the Midwest where we do get quite a bit of snow where I am. My only hesitation is the added weight at 9.5 lbs

  4. My FORMER 3 season tent is now modified to be my winter tent. It is a Tarptent Moment DW with optional added longitudinal Crossing Pole ;pus 4 fy hem stake points, 4 main hoop guy points and 2 mid fly guy points. All staked out my Moment DW can withstand steady 35 – 40 mph winds and 55 – 50 mph gusts and heavy, wet snow loads in my own experience.
My current 3 season tent? Tarptent NOTCH Li.
