I used an eastern grip since my Junior year of highschool when I started playing tennis competitively then I also used it in parts of my first year of junior college tennis then in the end or mid February I randomly out of the blue switches to full western and the comfort is good but I’m not able to keep my harder deep balls in as much. And like you said about slice that is annoying to go up against with full wester In a singles match Tuesday when I played this opponent who was hitting slice slot and it was really good slice I could barely get to them
recently I’ve been playing HS and college players and they are stunned and are frustrated. I’m in my mid 50s, continental grip, single backhand.
The only problem with pure eastern grip is it is you have to be very precise not to overshoot. I use something in between eastern and semiwestern, call it extreme eastern or very light semiwestern… Pure semiwestern twists my forearm a bit too much and I have no idea how is anyone able to play with western grip. That is breaking my forearm.
I agree 1000% with you about the western grip. Get rid of it asap. Why do parents allow these kids to keep their awkward grip? They must be winning early and are too afraid to change things. This is the wrong message imo. Iga has been figured out. I don’t think Nadal could win as much with todays power players. Fritz will continue to lose unless he comes to net. No variety in his game. My daughter had 2 handed FH at 6. I changed it early. She is now 30 and hits far better 1 handed. The FH actually became a weapon. It was rough for a few weeks. Weeks not years. Todays players can’t volley bc they don’t know how to approach or volley. It’s so boring. I can’t watch. Even Borg who had a terrible volley came to net. I call todays players “wimpy” lol. They have limited skills imo. An older woman wants me to help her but I think she has a continental FH grip. I only played with her 1X and will play Sunday and examine more closely. I have a hybrid like you (between eastern and western) I like contact in front of me. Where is the contact point for the continental FH? I personally am not comfortable with the continental FH grip. Thx for a very good, practical and useful video!!!
