Massage Guns for Endurance Athletes: More Than Placebo? | Cycling Science Explained

Massage guns have been credited with increasing athletic performance, accelerating recovery, and increasing mobility.

All of this could help endurance athletes, but what does scientific research say?

Interestingly enough, research hasn’t found conclusive evidence of a specific mechanism that makes you faster, but massage guns do seem to create a strong placebo effect that could actually improve your endurance performance.

So how should you use them to get the benefits, and what risks should you know about?

  1. i started a new job where i walk for about 9 hours. my quads and some underlying muscles were sore. i took a massage gun to them before bed and it greatly reduced the soreness. the next day, i got out of bed and my calves were tight. i put the massage gun to them for about 10 seconds each side and i was back to moving around normally. did that speed up my recovery? i don’t know and, to some extent, i don’t care. that wasn’t the utility i was in need of – i didn’t want to walk around all stiff and sore the whole day and it helped with that
